Red Rising: Sons of Ares #1 by Rik Hoskin, Eli Powell, Pierce Brown

2.0

I’m just going to review all 6 issues here.

Like the Penny Dreadful prequel comic, this feels...unnecessary. In some ways, it felt like a retread of the basic plot of Red Rising (the first novel) and Darrow’s initial motivation.

Fitchner just seemed too similar to Darrow (but it’s been so long since I’ve read the original trilogy, maybe I don’t remember his character all that well). The comic is full of action, but at the center is the love story between Fitchner and Bryn.

The art is not polished and is not very detailed - which lended to all the spattered blood and action, but overall, I didn’t care for it. It just seemed unfinished in some panels and rushed. Emotion nor facial expressions are really conveyed.

The 6th issue is the strongest, but even then, the ending is abrupt and predictable. If you’ve read the original books, you know exactly what’s going to happen, and if you haven’t, you could probably guess.

Overall, it’s not really original because we’ve seen this before in other media, and Red Rising. Nor does it really add anything to the series.
