Did not finish book. Stopped at 9%.
The anti-blackness in this book is highly upsetting. I was so excited read this book, and was so, so disappointed. A female bully in the group home was described as "black as tar" and "like a gorilla." The main character, Mary (who has "light skin" and "long, curly" hair that is "brown, lightened by the sun") is contrasted with her presumably negligent
and likely malevolent
mother, who has "dark skin and big lips" and "could never grow her black hair past her ears." I don't know if the author is black herself, but this was really disgusting and hurtful to experience as a black woman. I'm moving on to read better.
