The Hidden Keys
by André Alexis
I wasn’t sure about reading another book by Alexis, I found Fifteen Dogs well written and thought provoking but so sad. But The Hidden Keys, a treasure hunt, is a very different novel. Toronto serves as an important character as it moves between Parkdale, Rosedale, Jane & Finch, and more. In the same manner, characters cross class boundaries, with the wealthy drug addict and the policeman who marries “up”. The actual solution to the puzzle was a little disappointing. This is part of a larger 5 part “quincunx” so I am left feeling that maybe there is more to the novel than the initial read.
