I’m crying and I don’t know why

This is a really really good finale

The expansive world building is both a pro and a con of this book. There’s so much to cover, and we learn so much about the early history, including the Shattering and a pre-Shattering Syl Anagiste society. I absolutely loved those chapters, but it felt a bit overbearing because there’s so much new information. I do think I finally understand a lot tho. The magic system kinda finally makes sense

This story is about climate change. About injustice, war, systems of oppression. The unsustainable impacts of taking and taking and taking, whether that be the Earth’s resources or a people’s labor. But most importantly it is about relationships, and people, and golly when Essun and Nassun finally reunite.. Jemisin is clear in her storytelling, in a way that is refreshing -- a world built on systemic oppression is not worth saving. Sometimes you have to tear things down. And it is people, always people and the care that humanity can have for each other, that makes it worth salvaging at all
