Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World
by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
This was so beautiful that I don't even know how to describe it. It's a story of discovery about so many things, essentially relationships, and how you relate to the world. It's odd to read it from the point of high schoolers, because when i worked a job that constantly had "20 somethings" rotating in and out, i observed how they were not to the level of compassion or relating to the world that is shown here. but things come earlier when you suffer loss, and there is loss in this book. It's also such a beautiful portrayal of first love that it takes my breath away, and takes me back. I myself graduated in 1986, from a rural area, and I think i was in college before I really heard about AIDS to the level we all should have been hearing about it. What a terrible time to be discovering that you're gay and wondering why and what the answers were to this disease.
