Peyton Place

Oh this must have been so scandalous is 1956 (which is funny now since it’s really not scandalous by today’s norms). I hesitated adding it because I assumed anything described as “the blockbuster book that shocked the nation!” would contain annoyingly bad writing. Perhaps because my expectations were so low, I was pleasantly surprised that the writing is actually fine and the book is just plain old fun to read. It’s obviously sensational but the commentary about perfect New England small town society is very daring (and on point) for its time. Definitely recommend this one!
