Sandman Slim
by Richard Kadrey
Wow, this took forever. I blame Mark. He overheard part of the audio book, and requested that we listen to it together. Two three-hour car rides for vacation, and we're finally done.
That said, this is pretty good. It's the gritty, bloody kind of funny - I called it "Harry Dresden without his damsel-in-distress complex." There's some good world-building, but not so much that it can't be expanded upon later, and the characters are pretty well realized, though could always use a little bit more. For instance, the name "Sandman Slim" and how Stark got it seems like a dropped plotline. Someone calls him that, and he says he doesn't know who that is, or where it came from, and later refers to himself several times by that moniker. I don't know if this is on purpose or not, but it is a niggling little thing.
Finally, the narration by MacLeod Andrews is -awesome-. I often say I could listen to him read the phone book, but for now, I'll settle for the rest of this series.
