Emergency Contact
by Mary H.K. Choi
Thanks so much to Net Galley and Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing for an advanced e-arc of Emergency Contact.
I want to wrap both Penny and Sam up in bubble wrap (with their phones of course!) because they are each so beautiful and a little too knocked around by the world. I appreciate how Choi creates voices that feel real and grounded. The trauma that Sam and Penny each experience never feels gratuitous, and I especially like that Penny's full story is allowed to organically unfurl.. The book is compulsively readable, and it is a lot of fun to root for Penny and Sam to figure it all out. I had a few issues along the way - a couple of storylines are not fully fleshed out or dropped before they come to fruition (I’m still trying to figure out what to do with Sam's documentary). However, overall, this a wonderful debut. Looking forward to hearing more from the author!
