I had to take several long pauses as I read the book. Mother-daughter relationships are severely intricate and to navigate that along with the cultural barriers of raising a child in a different life from your own is its own silent struggle.
A long work comprised of stories from opposing perspectives of Chinese mothers raising Chinese-American children. It's such a wonderful read albeit confusing due to the shifting characters, I had to remember whose daughter belonged to which mother. Still an essential read for everybody growing up in multicultural environments especially Chinese-Americans. Amy Tan is brilliant in this.
