The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell

this was incredible. i'll elaborate more the next time i'm on the computer

okay, finally updating this!!

WOW. this is one of my first "hard scifi" books, and i wasn't sure if i was going to be able to get over the amount of religious symbolism throughout the book, but honestly???? it kind of helped me grasp some of the more foreign concepts being presented by the alien species and so i loved it.

this book is horrifying in a lot of ways, and describes the horror in such a way that is beautiful and heart-wrenching and sickening and grotesque...... so many things just worked for me in this book, i can't recommend it enough if you're into scifi.

easily my favorite part of the book is when the humans start creating a garden on the alien planet, and the aliens are laughing at them because it's a laborious task that seemingly has no real value. it just felt so.... real? i guess? to have this group of beings not understand why someone would put so much time and effort into something that seemed trivial, but is also just something that every human on earth has a basic understanding of, was so charming to me.

idk, i know a lot of people seem to have a problem with the ending of this book, but i really feel like the build-up of the story and the way we learn about everything that happens fit the narrative. i've already purchased the next book and can't wait to break into it. :)
