Even it is a good book, I will not recommend it for anyone because this book likes a hand squeezing around my throat, sucking my life force from me whenever I open the book reading it.

Yozo, who is very much a reflection of Dazai Osamu himself, had social anxiety from his young age, it forced him to put the happy facade when he interacted with everyone including his family. I cannot imagine what will be a life when you can't live your true self in your own house, it must be exhausted and Yozo was exhausted. He didn't enjoy going to school or having dinner with his family, he didn't think him deserved to be happy and have somebody to accept how he was as how he was. This trait haunted him through his childhood and until his adulthood, he was afraid with humanity but he also carved the interaction resulting in him hanging out with wrong people, getting into alcoholism and after that morphine addicted. Whenever he found some hope, he denied that for himself and pushed himself into deeper the depression. I don't know if I should pity him or not because comparing to other tragic character, Yozo bought his own downfall, he built up every single brick in that ruined fortress.

No Longer Human is definitely not a book for everyone. Though, if you want to know more about Dazai Osamu, this book is for you.

Notes: I read this book in my native language and I think the translator really did a good job.
