The Skeleton Road by Val McDermid
3.0
This one has been lurking on my Kindle for about 10 years but I finally got around to listening to it on Audible. It was fine, but I didn’t love it - despite being a Karen Pirie fan (and now very much seeing Lauren Lyle in my minds eye who it transpires is actually nothing really like the original character on the page). I think my main issue was knowing from pretty much the start “whodunnit” - which may or may not have been intentional - but also because I found the narrator to be quite intense. On the plus side (and it’s a huge plus - I’m still getting over the massacre of the Scottish accent in the most recent Paula Hawkins novel) she really was Scottish - but the over enunciation of the vowels was really quite off putting. And I’d forgotten how much Val McDermid’s quite frequent use of the word “lover” gives me the ick a bit.
