Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez

5.0

Olga Dies Dreaming is a beautiful story of a New York Puerto Rican woman coming into her own, as a woman, a business owner, out spoken advocate, and lover. Her story is intertwined with the stories of her family and community who love her, and a fight for freedom of Puerto Rico, the capitalists who destroy it and profit from its colonialism, and the complicated family dynamics that secrets bring. The way in which the story weaves the history of Puerto Rico’s colonization into the stories of family and how it has destroyed and changed communities—and those who are rebelling and resisting—will quickly envelop you in joy, sadness, anger, curiosity, and love. I found myself thinking about and reflecting on my own life as Olga does hers. I couldn’t put this story down as soon as I started it.
