A Little Life
by Hanya Yanagihara
well...ouch.
we have people we are bound to and they guide us and comfort us and they understand us without question. a lot of readers question the extremes this book goes to but i challenge those readers to reflect on how lucky they are. this book took a lot out of me, when i finished i felt relief knowing that all of these characters ended up okay, that the torment was over. it was a peaceful ending (that induced many tears) that reflects how i feel life is. it is primarily out of our control but- we can control who we are with, who we are, and what we do. and that has to be enough.
BUT:
one side comment: coining this book a revolutionary gay novel doesn’t really sit right with me. (i have seen this in several reviews and several interviews w the author) frankly the book hardly touches on these characters and their sexual identities. it shows them as stereotypes. they are in nyc and there’s no mention of the aids epidemic or any pride events or anything other than a characters disinterest in labeling himself. that is the one component of this story that left a poor taste in my mouth.
