The Ten Thousand Doors of January
by Alix E. Harrow
DID NOT FINISH: 54%
I just couldn't make myself care about the story. I didn't care about Ade, I didn't care about the guy she married, I cared so little about her pregnancy and everything just took forever to describe. The language was so unnecessarily and clumsily florid - once you notice that every description is a simile you just can't notice anything else. The central story about January took a backseat so often to other cr/p and that storyline was infuriating at the infinite bad choices January made at every turn. Bad was the only being I cared about. I wasn't initially going to DNF but the overwhelming relief when I decided I wasn't going to try to read anymore of it was telling.
(Take a shot every time something is described as "oily.")
