How Beautiful We Were by Imbolo Mbue

what you need in order to finish this story is endurance. and then when you (finally) get to the end, you will be extremely annoyed.

i read her other book and while i thought that was slow, this one takes the cake. this is so freaking SLOW and the payoff is NOT worth it. the writing style is vivid but way too descriptive. the number of pages is not justified whatsoever. the author could have made a more meaningful and impactful story in under 250 pages.

there was no need for the inclusion of thula’s letters to the village. absolutely none. it was unnecessary and did not add anything to the plot or the character herself.

i enjoyed the first 200 or so pages and then things went south after that. so slow and boring. tedious. i also found it odd that though the topics were heavy, the characters/writing style were devoid of emotion. the dialogue was also stale and stiff, much like in “behold the dreamers.” i am not interested in trying the author’s other books. i’ve seen enough.
