The 11:11 Wish
by Kim Tomsic
My first read of 2018 was a fun magical realism book about new girl Megan who tries to win friends and influence people using magic she accidentally-on-purpose wished into her life.
I always have trouble reading mean-girl plots (having been the butt of a few of them as a kid) but I know the kids in my class will learn valuable lessons from Megan’s journey and how she deals with antagonist Rhena. They’ll also learn how important it is to be true to who you are and to not try and be someone you’re not. The magical parts were creative and fun. One thing I wish I had known more about was the family: Megan’s mom and cool grandma were two characters to whom I became attached, and I wanted more. But all in all, I’ll have no trouble recommending this book to kids who need a little help (or reminder) dealing with friendship and social situations during that rollercoaster known as middle school!
