The Woman in Me by Britney Spears
5.0
challenging dark informative reflective sad medium-paced

What an important novel. And what terrible experiences for Britney to live through. I had no idea about the depths that Britney went through,  especially during her 13 years of conservatorship. I understand everyone has their own version of events, but Britney raises some really essential and disturbing (for the time) points about how the media treats females (worse, the comments they'd make to her as a teenager), famous moms, and people going through mental health challenges, and how they feel they have a right to comment on women's bodies. It's shocking how much power was given over to her father without fair and sound evaluations by neutral parties, how no one close to her stepped up for her during those 13 years to stop the control over her life. It's unbelievable how much paparazzi are allowed to hound and harass celebrities, and how tabloids are allowed to tear down celebrities without a thought to how it makes these individuals feel to see these unwanted public opinions about themselves.
