Lethal White by Robert Galbraith

4.0

This is the third mystery/thriller this year I've spent a whole day reading, and I'm starting to think they're dangerous for my schedule.

Not a surprise that I loved this installment and am distressed at the thought of waiting for the next one (though with when this was published and all the free time Rowling has on her hands with quarantine and, you know, getting cancelled, I really hope I don't have to wait long). Intriguing mystery with several complex threads all tied together with all the BULLSHIT Robin and Strike put themselves through. They yet again manage to dance around that razor edge between friendship and romance and I hate (love) it. This damn series is equal parts detective drama and slowburn fic. Chef kiss.
SpoilerActually the more I think about it the more the slowburn tag is apt, lmao. YEAH ROWLING MAKE ME READ THROUGH 650 PAGES FOR A HUG AND AN ACCIDENTAL KISS. Next book she's gonna make them HOLD HANDS to keep it spicy. FUCK yeah.

She IS very fond of the... Killer Monologuing As One of Our Protagonists is in Dire Danger climax. Fourth book, same formula. This might be a thorn if she tries it again in the next book, but so far, eh. There were at least a steady stream of clues in the story itself so the monologue is just tying all the threads together for idiots like me. This book was also the most removed from the cast of background characters - Wardle, Nick and Ilsa, and the like - which was very difficult to me trying to remember names years after I'd read the last book.

Speaking of the last book... the ending to this was a little "meh", but that's probably just me comparing it to the third Strike book (my favorite) and it falling flat.

Is this book objectively good? EhhHhH I think it could be remarkably boring in places, and the monologue climax is formulaic, but I'm unfortunately a big ol' sucker for both slowburn romance and webby murder mysteries so I like this a whole load more than I guess I should.
