Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology by Shane Hawk, Theodore C. Van Alst Jr.

dark mysterious tense medium-paced

3.5

Some stories stood out more than others, but that’s usually how anthologies go. Creepy, horrific, disturbing, at times infuriating — largely because of how realistic the horrors in this story are. Ultimately though, the best part of the horror genre is the catharsis.

Some of the most impactful stories:

“Kushtuka” by Mathilda Zeller

“White Hills” by Rebecca Roanhorse

“Navajos Don’t Wear Elk Teeth” by Conley Lyons”

“Hunger” by Phoenix Boudreau

“Snakes Are Born in the Dark”by D.H. Trujillo

“Night in the Chrysalis” by Tiffany Morris

“Dead Owls” by Mona Susan Power

“Sundays” by David Heska Wanbli Weiden

“Collections” by Amber Blaeser-Wardzala

“Limbs” by Waubgeshig Rice
