Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
5.0
Wow! I started this book back in August on audible and I knew from the first page of just names and titles that I needed a physical copy. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that some of the names were nicknames and not an entirely different person. (For hours I thought Nonagesimus was Nona Gesimus like a grandmother). So I dnf’d and attempted not one but NINE (lol coincidences happen every day) times to get a copy at Barnes & Noble, but alas, earwax.
It was on Kindle for free so I jumped back in following with the ebook for a good… 55%? I was helping someone move so since I was settled and invested in the world and the characters, it was easier to follow along with but it was still dense with a lot of very similar names when they’re all together. Thankfully there aren’t many scenes like that.
Do you want:
- an absolute sarcastic bitch of a main character who has no other goal in life than to be a prick?
- a concrete hearted enemy who truly and absolutely loathes the main character and there is literally not a single doubt about that
- NOTHING BUT ACTION
> action with motherfucking bone magic?!
> action with bad ass bitches and slick bastards with SWORDS?!
> more titty references than I was expecting
> lesbians
> approximately 300 doors and that’s not an exaggeration at all
> complete lifelong enemy turns to work together or die turns to well… something. (I did get a little spacey at the last 10% and honestly idk how lesbian it got. Do they get together at the end? I read it and forgot to find out so you’ll have to find out for me!)
> DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE LESBIAN SWORD WIELDING?!
This book has all that and so much more. There is a LOT of information constantly. This is a show and tell and tell and show and here’s a fight and repeat. And it is done SO FREAKING WELL! That being said, if you have a short attention span. I suggest a weekend where you can do nothing but start to finish this baby. This fantasy is definitely epic but (don’t quote me bc I haven’t read any others) this feels very digestible while the world is technically vast, we see that through the people in a very contained setting in a short amount of time. There are a LOT of characters in one place but they tend to group up a lot into very small groups which makes it easy not to mix people up. I think this series will get me into the Brandon Sanderson kind of stuff.
I can’t stop thinking about it honestly. The narrators voice just made me melt into the floor the whole time which really helped even at 1.7 speed. It’s not the series I want for Christmas time but I will be picking it back up next month.
