I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! Longbourn put me in an Austen mood, so I picked this one up.

First off, I thought the writing style was excellent. Ormiston did a wonderful job of keeping the language style of Regency England that we see in the original novel. It flowed very naturally, and it didn’t flip between that and a more modern style during dialogue and descriptions. It felt like I was reading what could have been in the original novel, which means they did an excellent job!

All of the characters in Unequal Affections stayed true to their Austen roots. There weren’t any moments when I went “They would never do that!” Yes, they made different decisions than in the original, but these were all very believable ones. All of the big plot points that happened after the first proposal in the book were also addressed in this one, with Ormiston’s unique take of course. Elizabeth and Darcy’s development from two of unequal affections into those who could truly love each other fiercely was absorbing and satisfying.

It’s hard for me to pinpoint what exactly about this book I liked so much, but I think it was that is was so very Austen that it felt like she had written it today. Would definitely recommend.
