Took me a while to get through the Rainwild Chronicles but the last half of book four felt much more like earlier RotE books and I'm glad I didn't skip these to get to the Fitz and the Fool books. I enjoyed this book a lot more than earlier instalments. There was a lot less focus on teenage-angst and a couple of the uncovered things about Elderlings and dragons have interesting implications for the rest of the series. I loved how Hobb used the new society as a playground for societal progress. I did not expect openly gay and polyamorous relationships from Hobb!
Sedric and Carson warmed my heart and I did not expect Sedric to have enough character growth to become a favourite. Both him and Alise confronting Hest (as well as him getting eaten by a dragon for his arrogance and manipulation) was very satisfactory.
