It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini

5.0

Many of the reviews I have seen for this book call it out for being transphobic, homophobic, and insensitive, among other things. I, however, being a person who has struggled indefinitely with the issues presented in this book, found it to be one of the most impactful and honest books I have ever read. I came to my own realisation after finishing this book, and I owe it to the intense reality presented by this Ned Vizzini. I think that the bits that have been interpreted as insensitive and not politically correct can be credited to the fact that this story is written from the perspective of a fifteen year old boy struggling with depression. It isn't right to refer to a transgender woman as "he/she/it", however the narrator wouldn't necessarily know that. I think this story deserves more credit than it gets, and it definitely has changed my perspective.
