wctracy 's review for:
Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies
by Jared Diamond
This was a very informative book which helps define that little doubt in the heads of most citizens of western society: aren't we just a little better than everyone else?
Well, no. You basically got lucky over the last 10,000 years in what crops and animals were available and how widespread your neighbors were. If there were good crops for domesticating and something like horses in Australia, we'd have native aborigines wearing hipster beards and complaining about the pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks in Seattle.
Unfortunately, Diamond's writing style borders on the side of "scientific paper." There is a lot he could have done to make this book really interesting and less of a slog to get to neat information.
