I have a number of qualms with this book (seems outdated, author assigns emotions and thoughts to his patients in a way I found grating, etc), but I’m giving it 4 stars for a couple reasons. 1) It calls into clear relief just how massive the changes in our cultural understanding of childhood development and developmental trauma have been over the last few decades. 2) It’s completely changed my understanding of the harm done to children via early neglect or abuse, and what it might take to counteract that harm.
