Alex is being harassed by The Winter Queen, she keeps sending Falin to search her home for various items that there's no way she could have, but at the same time forbidding them to have any unofficial contact just to annoy her into making a choice of which court to pledge allegiance to.
In the midst of this Alex accidentally stumbles on a new case where people vanish for three days and then they reappear only to commit some form of suicide, putting her in in pretty consistent contact with Death, her other forbidden beau.
I liked this one a bit better than book 2, there was more angst and twists and a bit more focus on her two relationships again.
