Whirligig
by Paul Fleischman
REQUIRED READING
After one very bad night of getting shot down by a beautiful girl in front of everyone and made a fool of by Mr. Popular, Brent drives home drunk, depressed, and with the thought to commit suicide. His plan backfires. Instead he ends up taking the life of a young teenage girl. As restitution, the girl's mother asks that he made whirligigs and place them in the four corners of the United States, so they can bring happiness to all who see them, just as her daughter did. Though Brent does not get to see the effects his whirligigs make in the lives of others, we do. Fleischman's post-modern novel breaks conventions. It doesn't ask to be interpreted, it just asks to be read.
