Bitter is a prequel to Emezi's novel, Pet, although you don't really need to read them in any particular order as both stand alone as enjoyable (and understandable reads). This is definitely a more cohesive, darker, and more mature book than Pet. Set against a backdrop of social unrest and revolution, Bitter follows the book's namesake as she exists at the intersection of art, activism, and a bit of magic. The book has a host of characters one will recognize from Pet, but is somewhat of a romance novel as it centers Bitter, Aloe, and their blossoming (and complex) relationship. The primary message is that there are more ways to be part of a movement than putting your body on the line (although each form of participation carries different risks). I would love to hear what young people thought of this book. A super worthwhile read!
