Ross Poldark by Winston Graham
5.0

Having really enjoyed the BBC series of Poldark, I wondered what the books would be like. I had in my mind that, because they were written mid-20th century, they might be a bit dry and unemotional and full of men being toxically masculine and brash. I was wrong, and I'm so happy that I was wrong!

The characters are wonderfully written and rounded (wow, a male author writing interesting female historical characters without falling into the easy excuse of 'well, women didn't have much to do then'. WRONG!). The plot is not exactly fast, but the leisurely pace is full of feeling and heart. I absolutely loved the insight into both ends of society: the rich and the poor. The detail of late 18th century Cornish life is incredibly immersive and meticulously researched.

It's described as a historical romance but that is nowhere near the most important or most overwhelming thing about it. The family ties were particularly beautifully written and all the different dynamics, both loving and tense, between Ross and Elizabeth; Verity and Demelza; Ross and Demelza; Francis and Ross; and even Jud and Prudie who I found so entertaining.

It is a great introduction to the set of books and, well, great, I have another book series to add to my ever-growing list haha
