The Templar Legacy by Steve Berry

3.75

I remember enjoying this one years ago. While I love the whole concept, and the second half is great, the first half of this book is a bit tedious. And the number of folks in the protagonist group is almost comically large, to the point where they’ll be having conversations and the number of people talking is legitimately hard to follow.

But if you’re looking for a Da Vinci Code-esque thriller with iconoclastic themes and a blend of fact and fiction, this book is for you. I think my love of later books in the series retroactively made this first one feel more fun.

Cotton Malone is a great protagonist, but he’ll stand out more in later books. In this one, he spends so much time listening to other people explaining things. All the other characters get good arcs, but he feels a bit of a cardboard cutout.

I do like the villain, though!
