The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart by Holly Ringland

4.5 stars out of 5 for this one.

I really loved this book. It was beautifully written and the characters were beautifully written, with almost all of them having very real and often relatable tragedies in their past. I enjoyed that it was a realistic story; Alice suffered unthinkable tragedy but life didn't magically get better when she moved to the flower farm. She was loved and well-cared for, but it wasn't a perfect life and there were huge secrets that were kept from her. I enjoyed that the characters were flawed, and they made mistakes, often ones that altered their lives. I struggled through Alice's relationship with Dylan, pained to read that she was effectively back to where she started with her father. I celebrated when she met her younger brother. It was just a very human story, and one where I felt that I knew the characters by the end of it.

My only disappointment is that there wasn't a lot of resolution for Alice. I had hoped that there would be more of a story there with Moss, the kind vet who had helped her. Their friendship didn't really have time to evolve, and there were open ends left with their story. I also had hoped that there'd be some closure on Toby, her childhood dog, but it was really left unknown whether he perished in the fire or not. But other than these minor unresolved plot points, I really enjoyed the book. I'd recommend it, but not if you're looking for an uplifting read - it takes a long time before it starts to uplift at all.
