Whistle: A New Gotham City Hero
by E. Lockhart
I appreciate that this and Nubia: Real One focus on teens in their communities - the juxtaposition of how Riddler and Ivy treat Willow versus her community shows that even though you can genuinely care about a person, you can harm them in other ways. I also really liked how Ivy was adapted - a lot of people have pointed out that the more we learn about climate change, the harder it is to hate her, so I like that this shows the nuances of environmentalism (like saying you wouldn't use a plastic straw, but actively gentrifying a neighborhood).
I am super conflicted on the ending because I would definitely read more volumes, but DC's recent graphic novels have largely been standalone, minus Kami Garcia's Teen Titans works. I would love to see more here but I really think this should have been wrapped up, and it's a shame that it was left ambiguous.
