He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan
4.0
4 for the first half / 4.5 for the second half
The pacing in the beginning felt quite off and maybe a little clumsy at times, and I didn’t really properly get sucked in until around the second half (the 4 stars are mainly for the Zhu / Ouyang interactions, which are delightful). But I’m glad I stuck with it, because I ended up very much enjoying the journey.
The prose throughout is magnificent as always. Nearly all the characters are deeply flawed, and yet Shelley Parker-Chan managed to pull such emotion and empathy for each one of them at different times. I personally loved the ending but I can see it being polarising.
All in all, loved it and can’t wait for more from this author!!
