Swimming in Paris: A Life in Three Stories
by Colombe Schneck
I stopped by The Wild Detectives in Dallas, TX a few days after the author had been there, and the bookstore bartender convinced me this was worth picking up. She was right.
While the three essays as a collection paint a picture of strength, endurance and resilience, my heart lies with the first of the three. To quote the author, who was quoting Annie Ernaux, “a solitude without limits surrounds women who get abortions.” I think it’s likely that this book will help to fill that void for other women who found themselves in positions similar to the author. Though it matters little, I am so proud of her for sharing her story.
If I have a critique, it’s that swimming felt like a bit of an afterthought in the writing, despite being the collection’s and final essay’s namesake.
