For someone who describes himself as a "historian", John Man sure has awful grammar. But more regrettable and disturbing is his flagrant abuse of evidence to fit a point. Stretching the record of the ninjas into ancient China cannot be done by repeating the same sentence in a multitude of ways over and over again.

Yes, Mr. Man, i do know you are trying to write to a white Anglo=american audience. But was there really a need to compare a dwarf to Gimli from Lord of the Rings? (I stopped reading in disgust and in protest at this point)

Don't dignify this book with a read. There are better histories out there, written by authors who understand what decent (not good) writing is about. As an undergraduate who spends so much time and effort in researching and crafting historical arguments this book is a dirty joke, in bad taste, at the art and craft of history.
