The Raven Boys
by Maggie Stiefvater
“They were always walking away from him. But he never seemed able to walk away from them.”
I can't really pinpoint when I finally decided to just let myself read this series, There is a lot of highly rated series I put off ( purposely in case they don't live up to the hype. Weird I know..) and this was one of them. Fighting my fear I dived in. Did it live up to my expectations? Yes.
I'm such a geek for the supernatural and this was chock a block full of details that were so rich and researched. The plot is imaginative the lay lines, ancient legends, palm readings, tarot and magic were so engaging. The characters were beautifully described and Stiefvater wrote them as real living beings in her mannerisms.
My criticisms of the novel are that it sometimes came across as very pretentious, very try hard. Blues "curse" was a little eye rolley. It will be interesting to see if this gets better developed. I found the pacing of the novel a little slow, so didn't feel the need to gobble up the novel. Towards the end, there were more questions asked than answered. This series spans 4 novels and so I look forward to book 2. Will Patton does a wonderful job at narrating, he had a steady voice that differed for every male or female character that never once made me lose my engagement. 4 Stars.
Side note- I have actually read Stiefvater before in the form of [b: Shiver|6068551|Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1)|Maggie Stiefvater|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1409283154s/6068551.jpg|6244926]. It was around the "twilight" time and I remember being slightly bamboozled and disappointed with it. She didn't rate very highly in her writing style. Its so inconsequential I don't recall the plot. It was good to find the hype around this series and her developed writing style 100% improved.
