The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

4.0

My issue here is that I went into this with very high expectations, too high, in fact. I had looked at reviews and detected that The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is one of Christies most acclaimed novels. In my head, I had gone over so many of the potentially shocking endings that when Poirot revealed the culprit I wasn't really stunned (although my actual prediction was way off). I had built it up in my mind so much so that ultimately it underdelivered.

That being said, I still enjoy these mysteries and I do love the Hercule Poirot character. His eccentric mannerisms and quirky personality forever cracks me up. And his foreign and peculiar use of language certainly gives him an edge.

Lastly, I'm not sure if the rinse and repeat model of a murder occurring surrounded by a small group of all potentially guilty suspects has what it takes to hit 5 stars. It feels like a copy and paste with a smooth change of setting and characters, and doesn't provide any astonishing moments or twists that we haven't already seen. We shall proceed with the next story to see how it fares!
