The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

3.0

Unfortunately, I think I expected a little too much from this book. I'd say that this book may actually be more of a 3.5 than a 3, but that's mostly because it is unique. Before reading this, I was told by many people that I would love it, it would make me bawl like a baby, it would change my life, etc. That's probably why when I started reading it I was expecting this book to be the best thing since sliced bread. In my opinion, it definitely wasn't.
I thought the way the book was written was pretty fascinating, death as a narrator seems very fitting for the time period, but I just didn't feel a major connection to the story. I did not cry a single time during this book, and that is saying a lot because I think I cry pretty easily.
There were a few redeeming qualities of the book, though; I think choosing to write a story about the people living in Germany and showing their suffering from Hitler's reign was a nice change from the usual Holocaust story. But overall, I thought this book was just okay.
