Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon

5.0

Another amazing novel. I really don't know how Diana Gabaldon does it, so intricate, textured, powerful - I can go on. I did read somewhere it takes her 4 years to write one of these books, it would surely take so long to produce such a work. It's like she's telling a true story, it seems too detailed to be made up. Anyway, this one started off much "slower" than the worlwind of Voyager but that's ok, it was nice to have a bit of peace, as Claire says so in the novel, and not constant adventure. It does pick up about midway and the focus shifts to Roger and Brianna and remains through most of the rest of the story which was a good thing. It's a shame some decided after the first novel not to continue on, shocked by some of the events in Outlander, but what I've found is that no hard subject is left unconfronted and that you really do need to read it all for resolution to many things, for example, the issue of Claire and Frank's marriage, which we know becomes strained but resolves touchingly in this 4th novel. I can only imagine Ms. Gabaldon has a massive outline or flow chart in order to create and maintain such threads throughout such extensive writing. Anyway, I greatly enjoyed this book. It was intelligent, compelling, emotional, thrilling and immensely engrossing.
