Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

4.0

I didn’t particularly enjoy this book in the midst of reading it, but, after sitting with it for a while, I’ve discovered it’s one of my favourites. The hauntingly beautiful aire of the moors of Wuthering Heights and the wild antics of Cathy and Heathcliff playing there as children is a lovely image. I also enjoyed the idea that Heathcliff didn’t become morally corrupted until after Cathy’s older brother treated him like a second class citizen because of his parentage and poverty. In a way, the people who lived on the moors created their own monster by treating him like one. The cycle of trauma perpetrated by Cathy’s brother to Heathcliff and then Heathcliff onto his sone was captivating and especially heartfelt when love is what finally overcame generations of hate. An excellent novel that I can’t wait to read again someday.
