The Maze Runner by James Dashner

3.0

Pretty enjoyable, if predictable. I saw every twist coming - perhaps because I'm a borderline paranoid reader who specifically looks for twists before they come, but I was still a little disappointed there. That said, I enjoyed the process of figuring out the Maze and its secrets - just because I knew early doesn't mean I didn't enjoy watching the characters get there.

The characters themselves really could have used some more development and differentiation, especially the main two. Aside from bravery and quick thinking, I really don't know what to call their defining traits. I also would have liked some more backstory and interaction. (I realize that backstory is scarce given some major plot points, but after the reveal it would have been nice.)

But despite the conventions and familiar YA dystopian themes, it's an enjoyable enough book for fans of the genre. I'll be picking up book 2 to at least give it a try.
