Liberation Day: Stories
by George Saunders
He's brilliant and kind and funny. He also seems to aspire to our better nature, which sets him apart. I always recommend seeking him out.
If you already like Saunders, you'll like this. But if you don't know Saunders, this isn't where I'd start. I might choose Pastoralia or Tenth of December for short stories, and obviously Lincoln in the Bardo for a longer read. And if you love Saunders enough to want to know how he does it, either read A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, or subscribe to his Substack, which is very active and really interesting.
He's one of the few people I've read deeply, and I think I've been rewarded for doing so. You might be, too.
