didn't expect to like this one as much as a marvellous light for numerous reasons but goddammit this was fun. it takes place over the course of six days in a single setting (a ship), and this type of set up doesn't usually do it for me but it worked so well for the purposes of this story.

i'd been a bit of a maud hater (perhaps more of a dislike) during book one but she turns out to be a delightful protagonist here. the band of unlikely allies she assembles are just as enjoyable, particularly her love interest, violet. we love an independent woman who does whatever (whoever?) she likes, whenever she likes. hawthorn also makes a reappearance, and the stuck-up bitch from book one has grown on me i fear. he's surprisingly funny even while sentenced to suffering mentally and financially at the whims of maud's investigation and i can't wait to see him and ross in the next book.
