Only having read Blood Meridian by McCarthy, I felt compelled to revisit his other works upon the news of his passing. I believe others should absolutely do the same.
The Orchard Keeper is an incredible debut novel. It is dark, enigmatic, and haunting. McCarthy’s prose does not disappoint on any page. The rapture with which he describes Red Branch and the mountain and woods surrounding it contains some of the most beautiful descriptive lines I’ve read in quite some time. And the characters in The Orchard Keeper feel archetypical, larger-than-life, in ways that do make the oft-thrown descriptor of ‘Biblical’ feel justified.
While McCarthy’s opus is certainly to be read, it would be a massive shame to ignore his other, earlier works, like this here The Orchard Keeper.
