The Book of Eels by Patrik Svensson

emotional informative reflective slow-paced

4.5

This is a lovely memoir and an effective survey of the history of the eel. It speaks to the author’s quality that he was able to make both halves feel quite thorough, despite the brief length of the book. At times I felt that it was oddly paced, and that it shortchanged elements of the Eel in history - but I really couldn’t pinpoint what I would have wanted more of, so perhaps that’s just a question of taste.

I read it in an English translation, and the prose was absolutely enchanting. I wish I could’ve read it in its original language, but the translator did a great job.
