The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson

5.0

This claims to be my second time reading, but it's really my third. Though the last one was several years ago so it almost felt like a first.

Anyway, this is my favorite of the original Mistborn trilogy. The first installment set up the world, but this one really developed the characters and mythology and religion.

Vin goes through so much character development here and I loved seeing her struggle. She was an abused child of the streets, so her uncertainty always felt authentic to me. After a life of trauma, it would be difficult to overcome everything after a year or two of being treated well. Particularly when the world is in upheaval.

Elend's character development is brilliant. It's subtle and works very well. He has his own set of struggles as he battles with his own fears of what it means to be a good person and a good leader.

There was a lot about being Mistborn and the power of Allomancy in the first one, but this one expanded on that a lot. We also learn about Feruchemy and start to learn about Hemalurgy. There is exploration into the Terris people and a glimpse into the kandra. All of it forms into a wonderful story. It's not fast paced or that action packed (though there are many great action sequences), but it develops things beautifully.
