A Game of Thrones
by George R.R. Martin
An enjoyable read, with brisk pacing and a facility for moving time along that belies its door-stopping size. I found the characters compelling and generally complex, with few one-note fantasy tropes thrown in, and with some interesting deconstruction of the utility of stock fantasy tropes of honor, loyalty, and fearless dedication to the cause of the right. I like the complexity of the world, and the various interpersonal relationships. I reserve the right to be disappointed if this leads to sequel degradation and a mythic arc that never finishes. If it does, maybe I go back and give this five stars.
