Annabel by Kathleen Winter
4.0
This is a first novel by Canadian author Kathleen Winter and it is stellar accomplishment. The book is about a child who is born in Labrador in 1968 who is a hermaphrodite. Only the parents and the midwife know this and it is something that the parents decide to keep from the child who, as determined the father, will be raised as a boy. The story is gut-wrenching and powerful with an unexpected ending. This book will surely be among my top picks for the year.
