The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 by Christopher Clark

5.0

I would say that this book could be 4 or 5 stars depending on how you feel about wading through dense descriptions of politicking in a political climate radically different from our own modern one. That being said, I'm not sure that Clark could have done any better - the prose was clear, the organization of the work and of most chapters made sense, and I felt at the end as if this was a very frank look at both the events and how the events have, since their occurrence, been interpreted in perhaps the wrong way. I was willing to believe most qualifying remarks Clark made about why a commonly-held conception was either incorrect or exaggerated, and I feel that this is an excellent primer for someone who wants to do a deep dive into the historiography, which is staggering its breadth and depth.
